Flixton grew as a farming village on the banks of the Mersey long before the suburban expansion of the twentieth century. St Michael’s Church at the heart of the old village dates to the Norman period, and several old farmhouses and the historic manor buildings survive amid the later residential development. The village merged progressively with Urmston from the 1920s onward as Manchester’s commuter belt expanded westward.
