What to Empty Before a Deep Clean, and Deep Cleaning an Empty House

The emptier the house, the better the deep clean: before a professional deep clean, clear every surface, shelf and floor you want cleaned, including kitchen worktops and cupboards, bathroom shelves, bedside tables and the floor under beds and sofas. Deep cleaning an empty house, such as before you move in or after you move out, is the most thorough version of all, because every cupboard, appliance and skirting board can be reached. This guide goes room by room, with what to empty, what to leave, and how an empty-house deep clean works.

Why does emptying rooms matter?

A deep clean reaches the places a weekly clean skips: inside cupboards, behind appliances, along skirting boards, door frames, light switches, tiles and grout. None of that is possible when shelves are full and floors are covered. Clearing in advance:

• Gets more of the checklist done. Time spent lifting and replacing items is time not spent degreasing and descaling.
• Protects your belongings. Fewer items handled means less chance of knocks, spills or anything being put back in the wrong place.
• Makes the result easier to check. Empty shelves and clear floors show exactly what has been cleaned.

Kitchen: what to empty

The kitchen takes the longest in any deep clean, so preparing it pays off most.

• Worktops: move kettles, toasters, bread bins, knife blocks and chopping boards to a table or another room. Leave only what is fixed down.
• Cupboards and drawers: if you want the insides cleaned, empty them. Boxes on the dining table work well. If you only want the doors and handles done, say so and leave them full.
• Fridge and freezer: remove food into a cool bag, throw out anything past its date, and switch the freezer off the evening before so it can defrost. Put a towel down for drips.
• Oven: take out trays, pizza stones and anything stored inside. An oven clean is an extra from £35 for a single oven on our price list.
• Under the sink: clear bottles and bin bags, and keep chemicals away from the work area.
• Tops of cupboards: take down anything stored on top so the grease that collects there can be removed.

Bathroom: what to clear

• Shelves, window sills and the bath edge: move shampoos, razors, toothbrushes and ornaments into a box.
• Shower: take down caddies and bottles so screens, tiles and grout can be descaled.
• Floor: lift bath mats, pedal bins, laundry baskets and scales.
• Cabinets: empty them if you want the insides wiped. Put medicines somewhere safe and out of reach.
• Towels: remove used towels; leave a fresh set out of the way if you need one.

Bedrooms: what to move

• Bedside tables and dressers: clear jewellery, chargers, books and make-up.
• Under the bed: pull out storage boxes, shoes and suitcases so the floor can be vacuumed and mopped.
• Wardrobes: if you want the inside cleaned, empty the shelves and rails. Otherwise, close the doors.
• Bedding: strip the bed if you would like the mattress vacuumed or cleaned (mattress cleaning is an extra at £25).
• Floor: pick up clothes, bags and chargers.

Living areas, hallways and storage

• Coffee tables and shelves: clear magazines, remotes, candles and photo frames.
• Bookcases: remove books and ornaments from the shelves you want dusted and wiped. For large collections, pick the shelves that matter most.
• Behind the TV and sofa: tidy cables and move small items so the team can pull furniture out safely.
• Entryway: move shoes, coats, bags and post so skirting boards and the floor can be cleaned.
• Cupboards under the stairs and built-in storage: empty them only if you want them cleaned.
• Balconies, sheds and garages: these are not usually part of an interior deep clean. If you want outside areas done, ask about pressure washing separately.

How do you deep clean an empty house?

With no furniture or belongings in the way, a deep clean can cover everything. The same order applies whether you’re doing it yourself or booking a team:

1. Check the utilities. Hot water, electricity and lighting need to be on. Cleaning an empty property without hot water or lights is slow and less effective.
2. Remove what’s left. Old food, bin bags, items in the loft hatch area, and anything behind radiators or in the meter cupboard.
3. Pre-treat the oven and limescale so the products can work while other rooms are cleaned.
4. Top to bottom in each room: cobwebs, light fittings, tops of doors, then insides of every cupboard, wardrobe and drawer.
5. Kitchen and bathrooms: inside all appliances, degreasing, descaling, grout and sealant.
6. Windows: glass, frames, tracks and sills.
7. Skirting boards, doors, switches and radiators, then floors last, working back to the door.

What should you leave in place?

You don’t need to strip the house bare. Leave:

• Large furniture such as beds, wardrobes and sofas (the team will clean around and, where safe, behind them).
• Curtains and blinds on their fittings.
• Fixed appliances.
• Items in cupboards you have chosen not to have cleaned inside.

Make sure there is running water, working electricity and lighting in every room, and that the team can park or knows where to park.

What to put away before the team arrives

• Cash, jewellery, watches and small electronics.
• Prescription medicines and anything hazardous.
• Important paperwork and passports.
• Fragile, antique or sentimental items.
• Pet bowls, litter trays and toys (and ideally the pets themselves, for the day).

What if the home is too cluttered to clear?

Sometimes there’s simply too much to move, after a bereavement, a long illness or years of build-up. That is not a reason to put off getting help. A hoarder and heavy-duty clean is planned differently, with clearing and cleaning done together, and priced on a free quote.
